Our mission at DTCA (Dora Tamana Cooperative Agency) has always been to empower communities across South Africa, and through this blog, we aim to amplify that mission.



The Vision Behind DTCA


Founded in 1992, DTCA was inspired by the legacy of freedom fighter Dora Tamana. Her unwavering dedication to social justice and community upliftment laid the foundation for our organization's core values. We believe in the power of collective action and cooperation to create sustainable change. Over the years, we have grown to support numerous cooperatives, each playing a vital role in their respective communities.

Empowering Cooperatives: Our Approach

At DTCA, we focus on four main areas:

  1. Coop Establishment: We help communities establish new cooperatives, providing them with the necessary resources and guidance to get started. Our aim is to foster self-sufficiency and economic independence through cooperative enterprises.

  2. Coop Support: Ongoing support is crucial for the success of any cooperative. We offer continuous assistance, from legal advice to financial planning, ensuring that cooperatives can navigate challenges and thrive in the long term.

  3. Training & Leadership: Education is a cornerstone of our work. We conduct regular training sessions and workshops on various aspects of cooperative management, leadership, and community development. Our goal is to equip cooperative members with the skills they need to lead effectively.

  4. Community Stores: We support the establishment of community stores run by cooperatives. These stores not only provide essential goods to local residents but also serve as hubs of economic activity and community engagement.

Success Stories: Real Impact, Real Change

One of our proudest achievements is the transformation we've seen in the communities we work with. Take the example of the Ndlovu Consumer Cooperative in Limpopo. Established with DTCA's support, this cooperative has grown to serve over 1,000 members, providing them with access to affordable goods and creating employment opportunities within the community. The cooperative's success has inspired neighboring villages to start their own initiatives, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Looking Ahead: The Future of DTCA

As we look to the future, our focus remains on expanding our reach and impact. We are currently working with over 12 cooperatives and have plans to support even more in the coming years. Our vision is to see every community in South Africa empowered through the cooperative model, fostering a culture of mutual aid and collective prosperity.
